Chapter Twelve

BECKY WATCHED JAMES LEAVING the practice that day. She’d got into the habit of looking on him as a formidable opponent, but today she’d glimpsed a different side of him. The encounter with the teenagers had shaken her up. She’d seen a couple of them regularly, was even on nodding terms with them. But the new older ones, the boy and the girl, had been unnecessarily mean to her. The amazing thing was that James had put them right in their place and she had the feeling that as long as he was around, she wouldn’t get any more trouble.

She really wished James would let her help him. As she watched the jacket of his suit flying behind him as he hurried away from the practice she thought how he was always in a rush. What was the big thing that absorbed all of his considerable energy? Then she remembered her resolve to contact his old practice to see if she could delve into what made him tick and what was causing him problems that were brewing over into his work life.

Becky looked at her rolodex of telephone numbers. She had actually phoned his old practice on the day she had mentioned to Holly that she was going to investigate his past. Becky had got out James’s personnel file and looked up his application form for the job. There was a very straightforward reference from his old employer, bland but acceptable although it had said very positive things about his relationships with his patients which had been borne out by all Becky’s experience of him. When talking about patients in the reference, words such as “excellent”, “caring”, “extremely well-liked” kept cropping up. It hadn’t said anything about relationships with his colleagues though.

Becky phoned James’s old practice manager, Giselle Bradley, to try and clear up some of the anomalies. At first, despite phoning half a dozen times, Mrs Bradley didn’t return Becky’s call which was fishy from the start. Then, when Becky had finally phoned, by chance, at a time when Mrs Bradley herself had answered, the woman had been less than forthcoming. Getting anything out of her, even off the record, proved impossible. The woman sounded touchy, unhelpful and very defensive. Becky got the distinct sense that there was far more James’s old practice manager could have told her but wouldn’t.

Becky decided that she must make a visit to his old practice and have it out face to face with Giselle Bradley. Before now, she hadn’t had the time but the events of this afternoon suddenly fired her with resolve. Getting up and stretching her arms into her jacket and grabbing her handbag, she hurried into Reception. ‘Kacey, I’ve got to go out and sort a few things at another surgery in town. You’ll be all right on your own for a while, won’t you? Holly’s around and I’ll be back to lock up.’

‘Sure,’ Kacey said, looking up from her computer. ‘Crikey, everyone’s in such a hurry all of a sudden.
